It's all ridiculous.
Having cell service on the actual trains would be ridiculous, yes.

Put Wi-Fi on the trains. I'm sure it is POSSIBLE and not cost-prohibitive.
It is of very limited use in the stations, unless you are waiting for a train at 3AM, when even Einstein predicted the stoppage of time.

Just divide the $ value of the rides by 1.05. Depending on the number of rides, round up the third column to the nearest cents. So for your 9 rides it's 23.58 or 23.57 depending on whether the machine rounds up or down. Though I would imagine that they'd round up or are dumb.

#Rides AmtNeeded Discounted by 5%
1 $2.75 $2.619
2 $5.50 $5.238
3 $8.25 $7.857
4 $11.00 $10.476
5 $13.75 $13.095
6 $16.50 $15.714
7 $19.25 $18.333
8 $22.00 $20.952
9 $24.75 $23.571
10 $27.50 $26.190

I'm glad my Bushwick elementary school education can be of use to you.

It's not that simple because I don't think they will let you pay $23.58 or $23.57 (they don't accept pennies, even on credit cards). I think it has to be a multiple of 5 or 10. That's why $22.30 worked so well, because $22.30 plus 11% is $24.75.

Really I never tried. I usually just go for $50 and don't care about the left overs. In that case choose your poison below. I rounded the numbers up already. $55 gives you exactly 21 rides. If they allow 10 cents then either $13.10 for 5 rides or $26.20 for 10 rides.

1 $2.75 $2.62

19 $52.25 $49.77
20 $55.00 $52.39
21 $57.75 $55.00

In case they just use a simple round function then 5 rides for $13.10 still works, 13 rides for $34.05 still works. Or 8 rides for $20.95 would work for a simple round function.

You too? Can you not read and make a deduction?

My comments were in response to wiivile stating "MTA is so much cheaper than other subway systems around the world. In London's subway you can't get anywhere for less than $5. I'm not really complaining."

Around the world implies different standards of living. I was not comparing the standard of living between these two great cities. Only the cost of a ride on the subway, like wiivile was comparing to London, by example, and to the other cities by what I quoted above.

Go bust his/her balls for comparing London to NYC standards of living, which he/she was not doing either. Only the price of a ticket.

Please. I think some of you mega posters just like to stir the pot to build your average posts per day stats.

That's a good point about those subways that charge you based on the distance you travel. DC does that. You want a monthly pass? Just $237!

This, exactly. I am a D.C. native and for the life of me, cannot understand why these fare hikes are such an issue for some NYers, especially those who are more than capable of paying for it. Most do not realize how good they have it compared to those living in other U.S. cities (I'm not about to compare NYC fares to those of foreign cities in 3rd world countries).

The METRO in D.C. is so ridiculously expensive. As someone who mainly buys weekly's, I feel fortunate knowing my $31 a week(soon to be $32) gives me UNLIMITED access to the subway at any and all times.
This does not exist where I'm from, as a $31.00 fare could easily get eaten up in a single DAY of sightseeing all around D.C.

Not to mention the fact that D.C.'s metro shuts down at 11:59PM sharp during the week. There was many a time I was left stranded downtown after a late night movie and had to wait to be picked up by my parents because I couldn't catch a green line train back home.

Could the subway be cleaner? Yes. Could the service be more reliable/efficient? Absolutely. But I will certainly take 24HR access and cheaper fare over either of those perks any day.
