Harlem Newbie
My rent on my apartment 97th and Madison has been increased $200... I've started looking for other apartments, and have found one for a good price on 110th and lexington... I asked around, and have gotten mixed reviews about the area... granted it's no 86th and park, but is it really such a bad area for a single guy to move into?
How skeptical should I be about the area?

Bad is relative, and it has nothing to do with skin color. Your danger is depends on how much you are perceived as an outsider, and if your perceived to be an easy target. Remember this is Harlem...If you have "brownstone revival" type intentions and appear like someone who belongs on Park Ave in the 50s, I would recommend staying below the 100s. If you avoid making eye contact, hide yourself under puffy coats and Met caps, and blend in, you should be ok.

I live on 110th near Lenox. You need to go to the area in the day and the night to check it out b/c 110th gets worse the further east you go. Also, I know the area near me has triple the amount of sketchy people hanging around in the Spring, Summer, and Fall than it does in the winter. So if you see a few sketchy people now, there will be a lot more when it warms up.

You hit the nail on the head. Obviously winter in NY has a more gully feel, and then you throw in the longer nights, and this would seem to be the most dangerous time. But summer, despite the extra sunlight, can be out of control in many neighborhoods that may be quiet in the winter. People get lazy, bored and look for trouble more often.

Agreed. This is the case for ALL the bad neighborhoods I've been in.

OP, you really need to go see it for yourself. Take a walk through at several points during the day.
Harlem is going through a lot of changes, and it's really a block by block type of thing (in the sense that some blocks are much better than others). I haven't been in that particular part of Harlem for a while now, so I'll withold comment. Check it out and make your own judgement compared to what people have said.

I'm a single female living right on 111th st. Never had any problems. Even at night. Look around and make your own judgement. If you feel comfortable enough go for it. Otherwise try the westside or below 110th street.

What? Is there an electrical fence they're not allowed to cross? Be realistic. The bad will walk to your block no matter how much you do not want to believe it. This is Harlem, not South Africa.

Lady have you ever even been in Harlem? I lived there for over 15 years.
This is NYC after all. We have to live, we have to go to work. The bad aren't limited anywhere you go. Your point is null.
