Not without a political firestorm.

Why? Just how do you justify those coming in from Queens and by extension Long Island free passage while those from New Jersey must pay? Ditto for the crossings to Brooklyn.

Meanwhile back at the ranch Staten Island residents who by nature of that borough being just that, an island, do not get free but only reduced tolls to get back home.

Red light cameras were around school zones only also back in the day.
There would have to be a change in the law to put speed cameras in non-school zones and the city needs Albany action for that. As far as red light cameras I don't know that there was any restriction to school zones when they started the program. My neighborhood had one of the first red light cameras about 20 years ago and the location is not a school zone.

Queens (and the Bronx, btw) and Manhattan are part of the same city. Anything in NJ isn't. Also the bridges in question essentially carry local roads, not major highways, unlike some of the major bridges between Queens and the Bronx. In point of fact the tolls on them should probably be dropped. No one should have to pay to go between boroughs. Further, all the bridges should be pulled from the MTA. The tolls collected should ONLY go to the maintenance of the bridges, NOT to subsidize mass transit. The transit fairs should be raised to compensate.

Every once in a while, some well know idiot ("Gridlock" Sam Schwartz comes immediately to mind, floats the idea about tolling the east river bridges. I immediately email the various politicritters involved to remind them how bad an idea this is politically.

Red dots are red light cameras, green dots are speed cameras. You can zoom in and click onto the green dots and it tells you if it's in a school zone.

That's all very well but how do you account for the tolls on Queens Midtown and Battery tunnels? Or the Triboro Bridge for that matter.

Slap a toll on the east river crossings and be done with the thing.

Tolls will be bad for business. And the local economy.

The city is structured to make money. NYC is a business. It's not breaking news. Why you guys mad?

Is there a better way? Of course there is. That's why some businesses stay open for years and others fail.

NYC will collect more tax revenue without tolls than with.
