I remember back in the early 2000's there was a lot of talk about the city's rising cost of living and expensive workspaces driving artists out of Manhattan to the outerboroughs and then out of the city altogether.
Back then, the city was the undisputed center of the art world, or at least in the U.S. Now, over a decade later, is this still true or have the predictions back then that the city would lose its dominance, came true?
We are still the capital of The US art world. Nobody else in the country even comes close to to the collection of artists, museums, galleries, collectors, and auction houses that are in New York.
With how clean and safe (aka boring, bland and vanilla) the city has become along with how expensive rent is i have to say its no longer the same. So many artist cant even make art anymore cause of how many jobs they have just to survive if their parents arent rich. NYC of the 60's/70's/80's that made the city beautiful, vibrant, culturally important is slowly near its death.
As the old saying goes "you cant wash away the seasoning and expect it to have the same flavor"
Not only is the city the center of the world it is also the center of the universe. In 500 years from now all life forms will meet up in Manhattan to discuss intergalactic space matters.
Artists aren't the only element of an "art capital." It would also include dealers and museum, and we're still tops with that.
Yea, it's the dealers, galleries, and clients which continue to put NYC on top overall. It may be expensive for artists to have the kind of affordable studio space they had before, but the market draw and infrastructure is still massively larger in NYC than anywhere else in the US. LA and Miami have made inroads, but they aren't even close to toppling NYC. It's a bit like the film and television industry in Los Angeles where it has hit a massive downturn in percentage of US production. That did happen, but that was coming from a base where LA was producing something like 90% of the total US film and television output. It's much lower than that now, but it's still obviously LA overall and much of that is because the major studios are still based in Los Angeles even if the nuts and bolts of production have been much more widely distributed.
Of course NYC is still the capital. What other city can it be?
