I am totally new to the NYC area so I was just wondering the opinions of these areas. I just kind of want self proclaimed definitions. I know this is all pretty broad, so I will say sorry ahead of time.
Tribeca is nice for residential as far as downtown is concerned. If you plan on temporarily staying in NY for only a handful of years, Soho/Tribeca/Village/Chelsea are all great neighborhoods as you will be right in the middle of the action to experience Manhattan.

Upper East and Upper West are great neighborhoods too, a bit farther from everything but still very nice.

Its all relative and depends on personal preference

You pretty much just listed the most "exclusive" areas of NYC and they are priced accordingly. Aside from the far east end of the Upper East Side (a hike to the subway) you are looking at about $2000 and up for studio apartments. Make sure you bring a thick wallet.

I lived on the UES for 3 years right out of college. If you're not into the college bar scene on 2nd Ave and getting out of the way of over-privileged old ladies, it's not the right place for you. During the time I lived there, I had an apartment between York & the East River, and I probably spent more $$ on cabs than on rent. There was just no way I was walking all the way to the subway. I am glad to hear it is nearly a mile - I feel much better about my laziness.

Chelsea is pretty noisy, as is the Village. Don't know much about Soho. The UWS is probably my favorite of the neighborhoods you've asked about. As other posters have said, all of these neighborhoods are pretty expensive. The best value is probably the UES, but then you've got to deal with the hike to the subway.

SoHo: If you're into the artsy/trendy scene.
Tribeca: Not a fan. Very business-esque. You'll find yourself not hanging around there.
UES: Classic and beautiful. Not much to do though? I'd rasise a fam here.
UWS: I don't really know it that well.
Village: Similar to SoHo. Very much into theatre.
Chelsea: Fun, trendy clubs, and amazing food. Nice place to live for the the young (like me).

All nice areas, but different from one another.

Tribeca is the most expensive part of the city as far as rents go.

If you're just asking for personal opinion of these places...

-Soho
-Tribeca
-Upper East and West sides
-Greenwich Village
-Chelsea

The only place I consider really desirable is the Village. I'm not crazy about Soho because of all the shopping crowds (though I like the Nolita area just to the east). I like what one person said about Tribeca - business like. Plus, there aren't really so many services there, like delis and cleaners, etc. I don't know about the UES and UWS so much - it's kind of different there, though you've got the park.

But the Village is nice, and really varied. East is a little funkier/trashier, and more affordable. And the West is quainter and more expensive. But both have great neighborhood feels.
