Whole Foods delivers.
I'm just too much a captive of [selected elements of ] the Puritan ethic to indulge in the practice.

I love Fresh Direct. Their meats, deli products and frozen foods are fine, they arrive in the refrigerated trucks at the proper temperature. The only problems I've ever had with them are with produce - I've found that apples and bananas inevitably show up bruised. I don't know if this is a packing/delivery hazard, or the fact that I don't personally select what I get.
I usually tip about $5.

They don't deliver to the Heights, so it's grocery delivery on the A for me.

Yes, they'd deliver to me, for twice the price and with none of the timeframe certainty of FreshDirect. AND I get the benefit of paying MUCH, MUCH MORE for my groceries, too! Wonderful...

I desperately miss Fresh Direct now that I live in the 'burbs..there are things there I could not get elsewhere and LOVED..ie. the fresh honey roasted peanut butter...and their ground beef is DELICIOUS-the produce was mostly fresh, but there are times you get produce home from the supermaket and it doesn't last, either...the frozen foods were always frozen and things are packed meticulously...I say go for it..you can't beat the convenience, either...they have delivery hours up until 11 pm! I used to tip the guys about $2, more around the holidays or with larger orders....I am now officially nostalgic and jealous...enjoy!

Pathmark is usually cheaper than Fresh Direct. Sale items at C-Town and Trader Joes are also usually cheaper.
I order stuff from Fresh Direct when they have a really good deal, but it's pretty rare. Don't be fooled by their marketing that they're so much cheaper. Saving money on groceries involves checking the circulars for specials from a number of stores, not just buying what you're in the mood for.

But if none of those alternatives is anywhere nearby, then FreshDirect is an excellent option. And I would also add that the quality at both Pathmark (from what I've seen in the one up in Westchester) and C-Town (from when I lived on the West Side) is beyond appalling. The filth in those stores defies description.
