Is there any way one can search the business name and history of a particular address or blockfront in Manhattan going back 30 or 40 years?

I've always been interested in the history of addresses on the blockfront of 770-782 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan prior to the 9/11 firehouse being built there as well as other addresses on that block because prior to the destruction of most of the block there were numerous run down properties with characters hanging out there(hustla thought they were sro's) as well as a store that had been vacant for years and years. Also a store that had been on the corner of 47th and 8th (Art Paradise) in the 90's was an XXX shop in the late 70's and I'd like to see how long things stayed and when they changed

So are there any municipal govt agencies that give out this info via FOIL(freedom of info laws)?

You can go in person to City Hall and inquire...this has nothing to do with the FOIA (it's Freedom of Information ACT). This kind of information is in the public domain.

Also, in the Sunday New York Times, there's a section called 'The City' where you can get answers to questions like these. You need to just write and ask.

"The City" is a separate section...and there's a Q&A section inside.

Residents beyond the five boroughs do not get The City. They get W'chester, NJ, or LI instead, poor guys!

It may not help with who rented the space, but you can see deeds online through ACRIS at nyc.gov.
