I notice that a lot of people here seem to think all hipsters in NYC are transplants from the Midwest.
Quite a few, if not most hipsters are actually native New Yorkers. My cousin lived in Brooklyn his whole life and he's a hardcore hipster, for a while he was dressing like a hobo from the 1920s.
NYC might actually be the birthplace of hipsterism, think Greenwich Village in the 50s and 60s.

Most of the white gentrifiers are also not from the MidWest either.
Many of the people on this forum aren't in NYC, or some of the ones that are scarcely leave their neighborhood.
The white transplants I've talked to so far have all been from the South. I also know a black guy from Virginia.
Which makes a lot of sense given the proximity
NYC is the nation's biggest city and as such gets people from all around the nation and world. Yes, you will meet Midwesterners here. And New Englanders. And Southerners. And West Coast people. As well as many immigrants.
