This thread apparently has only gotten responses from apartment dwellers. I can't believe anyone with a house is paying $40 a month for gas and electric.
I looked at my last Con Ed bill and gas was .48 cents a therm. The same period last year it was .25 cents a therm. That's almost a 100% increase. I thought natural gas was cheap. Is there some scarcity now? I have oil heat but imagine having your heating costs go up 100% in one year. Why doesn't the media ever report on such a price increase?
Update: It's not even Summer yet, and I've had my AC's blaring for over 30 hours the past few days. They cool well, so once it gets too cold, I just shut them off. Also, once it gets warmer, I get lazier, so I'm home more than usual on unbearable days.
I was expecting $60 - $70 this month because of the AC + my increased power usage overall (mostly video games, and the router transmission to power the online for my games), and received a bill for $46, just $6 more than my last bill. At this rate, once Summer is in full force, it looks like $60 - $70 will be the norm, if that.
When I picked my AC's (I only had 8 options), I did research on the one that had the highest EER (Energy Efficient Ratio), and it looks like it isn't just a marketing ploy. These things really do sip less power; my wallet is going to be so thankful.
