A single washer or dryer use in NYC generally costs around $2. Anything that's significantly higher than that is a rip off.

$2 is low for washers and very high for dryers (30-40 mins)

I use whatever detergent Dollar Tree is selling for a buck a half gallon. Seems to work okay.

What laundromat are you finding those prices?

Three dollars and change for the smallest washer and $.25/five minutes is about the lowest for dryers.

Wow! What size is that $3.00 machine?

My building washer is $2.25 for the small machine and $3.50 for the large machine

Dryer is $0.25 p/ 8 minutes

Apartment building, especially co-ops, are a LOT cheaper than the cheapest for-profit commercial Laundromats who charge what the traffic will bear...and then an extra buck.

Sorry, that seems expensive to me. There are still places for $1.50 each or less.

Can you talk to the building about their laundry contract?

You cannot compare "building" (route) laundry services to that found in a commercial laundromat. They have different cost structures for a start.

In most if not all buildings laundry equipment is part of a route service contract. That is the building agrees to share revenue with the "route" owner who in turn installs and is responsible for maintenance of equipment. The utilities for washers and dryers in residential buildings are billed at that rate, this includes water and sewer.

OTOH commercial laundries including laundromats are for profit enterprises that pay a vast and staggering amount of taxes, fees and surcharges. Also unlike building/route laundries laundromats must pay rent, which in NYC keeps going up.

The machines in the bldg. I live jumped from $1.50 to $1.75 per machine approx. a year ago. I assume the prices also have something to do with which borough one is in.

I'm gonna have to. I have a small hamper that I roll down once it's full. Last week it was almost full and barely fit into the washer. Of course when the washer is that packed it's not as effective at cleaning clothes. On top of that, 4 out of the 8 machines in total didn't work, (1 washer didn't work, 3 dryers didn't work) so I wasted some detergent putting it into a washer that didn't even work. Then once it came time to dry, only one worked, and of course, someone had to be using it, so I had to wait until they were done. If they're gonna charge $6.00 per total load, they better have their ish together, which they don't.

People on the Upper West Side don't even pay this much. Smh

Final verdict, I won't be using the Laundry Room anymore, unless it's bad weather / dead of Winter. I don't want to play Roulette when it comes to this; if it were working the way it was supposed to, I'd be content, but it was just a nightmare from start to finish. Hopefully if no one uses it they'll lower the price.
Auntie lives but 4 blocks away, I'll just do my laundry over there, spend some quality time, and hopefully get some nice dinner, too. I am her favorite nephew after all.
