Talking Where to live in NYC...Murray Hill, Midtown West, Upper East Side

Hello!

I currently live in Astoria, Queens and am looking to buy a co-op in Manhattan. I have been looking at the upper east side and midtown east primarily. But looked at a few co-ops in Murray Hill this weekend but am unsure of the area since I saw many Indian restaurants and then I read that area is sometimes known as "Curry Hill". Has anyone lived in that area (Murray Hill) and can tell me some more details about the area?

Also, would you recommend upper east side as compared to midtown east or vice versa?

I'm just looking for some advice, thanks!

Lived here for 2 1/2 years. Dont be put off by the Indian restaurants, since there are more of an asset to me as they provide great food at great prices(and, you wont have trouble finding a cab). But thats not to say its just Indian food.. there are other great restaurants. There are a handful of french places, and you're a brisk walk away from restaurants on Irving Place, Gramercy and Madison Park.

Food aside, the area is fairly lively (especially when Baruch is in session), but manageable. we live on 27th and lex, and would like to buy in the area, but haven't found anything in our price range.

I would venture that the restaurants on Lexington are really nearer the Grammercy area than Murray Hill. The East side, anywhere you've mentioned is just fine...I've lived here for 10+ years (after a sojurn on the West side and then a change of jobs) and find it's a nice place to live.

If I didn't want to live so near work (I walk to work) I'd live on the upper West Side. But you DO get more bang for the buck on the East side in the areas where you're looking (obviously NOT on the Gold Coast on Park or Fifth Aves.).

Hmmm. I think Murray Hill is a cool place.
Never lived there, but I always find something to do there.
