But if you're going to single out money, then sh1t, that is millions of people's allure. Not really certain if you meant that in a negative way or not.
I didn't mean it in a negative way. Money makes the World go round, and the FRBNY circulates a lot more of it than any of the other regional chapters. If you were that miserable in NYC then you'd hold more weight towards other variables, but that appears not to be the case. NYC does you good.

NYC isn't for everyone. No-one is making you live here, work here or even like it here. Maybe you should have spent a little more time finding a career that would take you somewhere more your taste rather than whining on an online message board?

I don't get why anyone else would want to live there though. Obviously plenty of people
don't mind the traffic, crowds, lack of living space, lack of trees..
I'm considering cities to spend a month each and would like to know what is the
appeal I'm missing..

New York City is an awesome place. Briefly capital of the U.S. it is now, hands down, the capital of the world. At the same time it is as much a collection of friendly small towns as a huge city. Traffic; the mass transit is among the best of the world. Start looking for the positives. Move elsewhere; you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

I've heard it said more than once over the years that when people are walking the streets of the city, no matter if they grew up there, lived near enough to go in regularly, or came from somewhere else, they feel as though they belong.

Sometimes you can't know the "why" until you've been there, and even then the "why" is not something you can put into words. I felt that way in Paris. Never had a desire to go to Paris, didn't get what the attraction was, but I was meeting my daughter in Europe and she wanted Paris on the itinerary. When I got there and was actually IN Paris, I looked around and thought to myself, "this is why. This is Paris." It's the air, it's the light, it's the vibe, it's all of it. New York is the same way.

Great career opportunities and salaries.
Short commute to/from work (12 to 15 mins).
Great food options due to the many different ethnicities here (this should be number one for me. I am a foodie)
Beautiful old houses. I hate the cookie cutter homes found in other southern/midwest states.
In the suburb u have enough space to plant trees. I have a peach, pear, cherry and blueberry tree in my yard. In the spring i plant tomatoes, thyme, parsley etc. It tastes completely diferrent to what is sold in stores. I don't need a forest in my yard.

World class entertainment. I have been trying to see atleast one broadway show per month since it warmed up. Next one is scheduled for july. Museums and other stuff to enjoy.
Great entertainment. I am attending a concert tomorrow.
Our house is 2300 sq ft. Pretty adequate for 2 people.
Seasons. I look forward to each season. In December I blast Christmas music and open my curtains while watching the snow fall.
Beach. I cant swim anyways so I am not too perturbed about the dirty water. I go to read a book and listen to the ocean. My beach umbrella and chair were used on the first 80 degree day!!

Airports. I am passionate about traveling. More flight options means cheaper and more regular flights.
Close (enough) to other interesting cities.
Many nature related things that one can do upstate NY.

New York is amazing because of its energy, vibe, classic American elegance, diversity, nightlife, opportunities and how alive and friendly the people are. Everyone is striving to be the best version of themselves by competing against others with the same mentality and its infectious.

That being said, I don't agree that it's the capital of the world. America is far too insular for it to be the capital of the world. London easily takes that title.

I have trees. Wonderful, old-growth trees.

And pretty much anything else I could want.

we had a house near hawley in the pocono's we we were going to retire to but after 5 years of part time life we decided not to retire in the pocono's .

for starters there is no decent public transportation system if you can't drive

we live in queens in nyc so to us medical facilities were very sparse , same thing with specialists .

no where to really work a bit if i wanted except at very low pay .

winters are long and cold .

really not much to do once the walk in the woods or around the lake grow stale .

we realized everything we would want in retirement was already right here in queens so we sold the house and retired here in queens .

going on 3 years and we have yet to lack for anything to do winter or summer .

I went to the opening night last year. It was the most overcrowded event I've ever witnessed in my life. Hopefully since they've figured out how to control crowds because the concept is great. I think they just underestimated the demand Queens can generate. Much more potential than any Smorgasburg or Brooklyn Flea event could ever produce.
