They should just remove all the turnstyles and replace them with those spiraling bar things that you CAN'T jump over. You know, these things.

Couldn't care less. Where I live and work, law and order is DEMANDED by the populace. Rightfully so. I'm not longer concerned with or responsible for the leftist parts of the city. If people who frequent the subway want it to be lawless, make it lawless. I have a gun 24/7. Not my concern.

I mean can we all take a step back and consider that this this is PUBLIC transit, as in not for profit and receiving public tax dollars.

Many other countries have public transit systems that cost a nominal rate such as $0.10 a ride?

Public transit should really be free for the public to use since we pay for it with our tax dollars

Somebody commented how if they really wanted to stop turnstyle hopping they could replace turnstyle ma with the spiral bars. However they want this so that they can keep writing people tickets as an unofficial tax on the poor.

City spent over $500 million last year on arresting farebeaters

For that price tag you could just give poor people discounted metrocards.

Instead the government has been intent on sending people to Rikers Island at an exorbitant cost just for skipping out on $2.75

Chasing farebeaters is a waste of money, and having a criminal record for farebeating is too harsh, but that doens't mean people are entitled to something for free, that everybody else has to pay for.

Only in America and especially NYC I've seen farebeating. I have never ever seen farebeating in Europe public transit system or in Asia.

What happens if you lock someone up in jail for farebeating or public urination? They may not get jobs after getting a record, meaning that they may permanently be on some form of government support, including prison.

Is it worth the taxpayer dollars to imprison people for minor crimes?

Truthfully, if you reduce the high levels of unemployment among certain sectors of the population you reduce crime. Welfare reform was a factor in the crime wave drop, as were drug overdoses, AIDS, and the fact the worst criminals killed each other so people like Airborneguy didn't have as much to do.

I don't mind this. Its not like there will be zero consequences. No, as a general rule, all this policy change means is that turnstile jumpers won't face criminal charges. They'll still get civil tickets, etc. We have a big problem with over-criminalization in our society.

There shouldn't be turnstiles anyway.

How do women push baby carriages through those things?

The MTA is a public agency, and to be fair, they cannot be seen as excluding certain demographics. Can disabled people easily access those spiraling bar things?

Also in case of disaster, adults fleeing a station can jump over the turnstiles and run out of the station. The spiral things maybe more of a trap.
