If used to being in a *hood* environment, then will be fine. Am just pointing these things out. Would recommend you go for a *stroll* over the to see what you think of the supermarkets (can always to go Whole Foods on 125th which is opening this month) and see what you think about the vibe or whatever. Personally could not live there, but I pay market rent, so can be choosy. May work for you just fine. Just don't go in there blind *running* out of your dad's house or whatever. *Out of the pot and into the fire*. Am curious. How much would the apartment be in rent?

If willing to pay a little more, can get a nice studio in a better neighborhood. Would recommend Kingsbridge. Decent amenities, subway, express bus and MetroNorth nearby and *MUCH* safer.

55k is actually not bad. Can certainly find a decent place at that price. If willing to pay $1300 - 1400, can find some decent 1 bedrooms or nice studios in much safer areas. Should search on Trulia and other places. Found one in Pelham Gardens. Price is very good, though may be in a finished basement.

Am here to say you have to search in the Bronx and know the areas. As was said, can find something in that price range, but have to look or whatever. Can do Kingsbridge, Throggs Neck, Woodlawn and others. Would have to commute more, but would be in a safe neighborhood.

Can also try Parkchester. Rents are in your range. Area is mixed and safer than the current one you're considering:

This one you should consider. Is in a co-op:

Building is safe - has doorman. Express bus across the street and MetroNorth not far away. Also have subway nearby. Amenities aren't great, but can always get groceries elsewhere or whatever.
