If I were going to Philadelphia - cheaply - I'm assuming my best option would be by bus. If there are various lines, does anyone have recommendations?

I would say go for the Greyhound or Megabus because I consider those two company put safety first.

I would take greyhound. I went for 15 dollars round trip. Go for it.

One could also go by rail cheaply - NJ Transit to Trenton and there transfer to the Philadelphia SEPTA. But I believe that is very time consuming.

Megabus is good but I'd personally go by rail.

When looking at bus lines, you might consider what the pickup and dropoff locations are and which ones are more convenient for you. Once I took Megabus, which stops on 34th St between 11th and 12th Ave. While it was convenient (right near 7 train), the thing I didn't like about it is that the bus stops are not protected from the elements. If it's raining, snowing, or simply just too hot and humid, you may be standing out there in a line on the street for 45 minutes in whatever that weather is.

I happened to take the bus on a very hot and humid day and I was really not happy standing out there in the blasting heat. I would have preferred Greyhound at that point, where the stops are in the actual Port Authority station.

Just one small element to think about.

Chinatown bus saves a lot of time by going through the Holland tunnel instead of the Lincoln tunnel. But on the downside it's the Chinatown bus.

You could also do NJT to Trenton and connect to a SEPTA train

There is no SEPTA train at Trenton. SEPTA trains only operate in Philadelphia. Their is a light rail that goes from Trenton to Camden. Than from there you can transfer to Patco train. Patco trains are like PATH trains. You know how PATH trains connect NYC with JC and Newark? PATCO does the same linking Camden NJ with Philadelphia. From PATCO trains you can connect to SEPTA line to philly. All of that would be more costly and time consuming. I would just do Greyhound for 15 dollars round trip to Philly. Greyhound stops right at downtown Philly Chinatown is right next to PATCO and SEPTA rail lines. Like NYC, Philly has heavy NJ Transit influence.

We have always gone NJTransit (Senior, off-peak fare) to Trenton and then onto the SEPTA line into center city Philly. Always under $10 each, sometimes a LOT under.
