You have all sorts of options for lodging. Go to Hotwire/Priceline.com or similar where you can shop around and read ratings of the various hotels, even if they don't mention the specific hotel.

Is Long Island City your only option outside of Manhattan? If not, you can try various locations in New Jersey, Westchester, and Queens. All of which are serviced by frequent short travel train service into Manhattan and more potential locations will offer increased options for hotels.

I just read somewhere hotel prices in the city has dropped. Pick the highest rated one you can afford. Generally, people who live in and around NYC isn't going to stay in a lot of different hotels in our hometown.

Generally, hotels are more expensive in Manhattan. If the current rates are lower than what you expected and within your budget, then by all means stay in Manhattan where all the famous landmarks are within a short subway or taxi ride away.

getting around the city is fairly easy with public transportation (especially if you can quickly figure out the subway system). you shouldn't limit your hotel choice to relative distance to sightseeing locations. anything below Central Park South is convenient to all, provided you can afford. honestly though, if you can't, you probably shouldn't be taking a vaca to NYC. because EVERYTHING is very expensive.

Default NYC trip

I would think about New Jersey and take the bus over it would be much cheaper than NYC and Long Island
My boss lives in Lodi, NJ and he takes bus to work it is 10 miles from Grand Central.

CAVEAT make sure you check out the location of the hotels against one of those travel websites as you don't want to stay in an area that isn't nice no matter where you stay.

Long Island City is in Queens and is a close subway ride to Midtown Manhattan.
