I'm getting dropped off at a subway station in North Bronx to head into NY for a weekend. We're driving in from Hartford area. Which northern stop would have an express into the city, and be easy to get to from the highway?

Botanical Garden is easy to get to, off Moshulu Pkwy at Bedford Park Blvd. Fordham is another. You'd want to check the schedule -- not all trains make all the Bronx stops. Go to MTA | Subway, Bus, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North and click on Metro North, east of the Hudson.
Don't worry about "express" to Manhattan -- there's only a handful of stops, so it's not a relevant thing. Harlem/125th might be the only stop before Grand Central, depending on which one you choose.
Oh, by the way, if it's the weekend, do get a "city ticket" when you buy your ticket at the machine. It's only 4.25, compared with six or seven bucks otherwise for an "off-peak" ticket. It's listed on the machine, but at the end, after selections like "peak" "off-peak" round-trip" etc.

Oh, I hadn't notice you specifed "subway" stop. I saw 'Hartford' and figured you'd be looking for the Metro North.
Yep, 6 train Pelham Bay, as someone mentioned. Station is right by the NE Thruway I-95, opposite Pelham Bay Park.
But I don't think you'll find an express train on the weekend. Just hop on anything going to Manhattan, and enjoy the many local stops along the way. Maybe bring a magazine. At least, half of the Bronx ride is above ground, so you have something to look at for a while.

Both subway stops mentioned are your best option - the 5 does go express in Manhattan, the 6 does not so you would have to change to the 5 at some point. If for some reason coming in on the Sprain Brook into Bronx River Parkway, then the 2 at 241st Street is the station you want.

Have them drop you off at the 4 train at the Mosholu stop. Drive down the Bronx River Parkway and then exit onto Mosholu Parkway. The station is at the northern corner of Mosholu and Jerome. Once your driver drops you off they can continue on west and easily hop onto the Saw Mill Parkway and/or Major Deegan Rt 87 to get back out of the city. Alternatively you can do the Norwood D train stop if that gets you closer to where you want to be in Manhattan.

The 2/5 train is a much longer ride through the BX. The 6 is local.. forget that.
