I retract anything I've ever said about moving to far out neighborhoods. I'm keeping my rent stabilization, and by byproduct short commute, to avoid getting stuck like this. At least I know at worst case scenario I could walk an hour to work.

Well not everyone is the position to carpool or live within walking distance from work. Certainly things seem to be getting messy and messy with the subway service.

CarpoolWorld is a good site to meet people who are interested in carpooling.

I have met 2 people on that site. I started carpooling in 2013 with a couple who lived in Tenafly but worked in Brooklyn. They picked me up at Fort Wash on 178 st and took West Side Hw to SoHo then 42nd st then Soho. (i was working in Soho when i 1st started the carpooling then i took a job on 39 st 8th ave then i took another job back in Soho). This carpool ended on the 2nd week of July.

I found a new carpool on that site and it's the same process. The guy works in SoHo for the City's Park Dept. It's only 25.00 per week.

If one lives outside the 5 boroughs (except Staten Island), carpooling is a good option perhaps. But going in anyone's car from Brooklyn or Queens to/from Manhattan during rush hour and probably also the Bronx won't be a good commute!
