Along the lines of this thread, I just came across this NY Times review of two relatively new Vietnamese places in the East Village. The chefs are children of Vietnamese immigrants. Pretty favorable reviews.

Bowery and Grand is in the middle of Chinatown which is still very much an immigrant community. There's also a cluster of Vietnamese places by the courthouses. However, I don't know if the more recent immigrants move here or go to the outer borough Asian neighborhoods instead.

Thanks to this thread I was reading up on the Born To Kill Gang. Did the Vietnamese own most of the businesses on Canal? I did not know that. I use to go to Chinatown on weekends in the 90s as a child. I really did not notice a lot of vietnamese there.
