I'm considering parking in Harlem near the 145th st station (St. Nicholas). Is that area considered safe? I'll use a parking garage, but might go from subway to garage after dark.

Even late at night that's a relatively busy corner. Many CCNY students use that stop, police are often patrolling the station, a great fried fish hole in the wall there, and many more middle and working class residents nearby than you might suspect. No absolute guarantees anyplace, but it's far from the bucket of blood it used to be. Just use basic street smarts for the short walk to the garage and you should be fine.

It's fine. Uphill (amsterdam, convent) is better than downhill (st nick), but even st nick is relatively okay.

Default very safe

There is a police station inside of the train station. The police cars park at the corner. The Area is always full of cops. Also the CUNY public safety patrol is always paroling the area between the college and the station.

Amsterdam and Saint Nicolas Ave is fine these days. Saint Nic Ave has bright police lights now at night too.
