There seems to be a lot of talk & hoopla about him recently. Some anniversary regarding him must be approaching. There have been articles about him in the NY Post, NY Times, even the ID channel is going to show a "brand new documentary" on the subject next Sat. I'm going to watch. I was living in upstate NY at the time to fully feel the effects so, has anyone in this forum lived in NYC at the time of this "one man killing spree" to recall how they felt? Was the whole city 'gripped with fear" over it as the papers say or is this all media hype once again.

I was too young & living in upstate NY at the time to fully feel the effects so, is anyone in this forum old enough and lived in NYC at the time of this "one man killing spree" to recall how they felt? It was pretty creepy. This nut just picking off people at random throughout the city and sending bizarre letters to the newspaper.
it was very strange. The girls were afraid. They all talked about dying their hair blonde because Son of Sam only killed dark haired girls, then the news said he killed a blonde.Girls were freaked out
People wanted to catch him and were suspicious of the local weird guy. It was a bad summer.
The first SoS murder was on July 29, 1976. I was about 11 so I don't remember much. I do remember all the sketches on the front pages of the Daily News. We lived near Bensonhurst at the time, so the final murder of Moskowitz and the blinding/wounding of Violante was pretty close by.
If you want a really interesting read about SoS, read The Ultimate Evil by the late (great) Maury Terry. Some of it might sound very far fetched, but he makes a good case for Berkowitz not acting alone. I could not put that book down.

Reason: clarity
I was living in SI. There was always talk about people sure he was going to cross the bridge. (which seemed very possible, as it seemed like half of Brooklyn was coming over, in those years.)

He's currently confined in Sullivan Correctional Facility, a high security state facility in Sullivan County near Woodbourne,NY. I believe you could open the gates and he wouldn't budge, he's perfectly content there. He's very religious , no problem with staff, and generally accepted by his fellow inmates. He works with inmates who have learning disabilities so I guess he's found his niche. While he's eligible for Parole it will never be granted I don't believe, even in Liberal NY. Last I knew he skips the hearing, no interest in being released. He's infamous for his heinous cold blooded murders, claims remorse and seems sincere, not that anybody cares. He's content in his own world, lots of mail, visitors, media requests. His crime captivated the media, he was crazy as a fox, lucky to have been caught before more senseless shootings. When I last saw him in passing he was polite, said "hello sir" and kept moving. It struck how such a seemingly harmless looking person had ruined so many lives. The media should stop telling his story for ratings, he can't profit from it but they can.
