Yep, the delightful daily commute will be from MARS.
The reason that NYC is so crowded and expensive is that people have decided EN MASSE that a long commute SUCKS...and all the king's horsemen and all the Times realtors cannot put people into the suburbs again.
NYC suburbs are doing fine - home prices and demand rises year over year. Some NYC suburbs have quicker commutes than travelling from one place to another in the city itself. Plus a one seat commute on a metro north train reading or snoozing hardly sucks compared to a 40 minute standing ride on ****-stinky subways.
You are confusing extreme commuting and commuting, and confusing exurbs with suburbs. Just like all cities are not the same (NYC and East St. Louis for example) not all suburbs are the same. Metro area suburbs built around rail lines and villages 300yrs old or more are not the auto-centric generic subdivisions around Phoenix or such.

Not really. The number of extreme commuters (ie, those commuting from the exburbs) is expected to grow significantly, albeit from a relatively low base.

Am in agreement. Traveling within Manhattan can be time consuming and annoying. Much nicer to relax and come in without all of the noise, homeless and the like on the subway. Can tell you, know of many people that live in Manhattan and often times look at how long it takes to reach my place of employment from within Manhattan versus outside of it. Not a huge difference.

It doesnt even matter anyway because the suburbs are just as expensive as the city now.
What costs more, NYC tax, or a Metro-North/LIRR monthly pass for somebody making $100K gross?

Am in agreement. One pays slightly less in rent outside of Manhattan in the boroughs, but if living in a place with no subway, am here to tell you it costs. Folks out in Douglaston for example (which is so far out in Queens that it might as well be in Long Island) tend to take the LIRR. A monthly runs $226, not including any subway or bus needs, add say $1800 for a one bedroom apartment, and you need to be making over $80,000 to afford everything.

Plus the Metro......if you're not fortunate to not work near 34th Street
