so what do you do when you wait a day or 2, and its the same situation?
If I plan to wash on Tuesday and the machines are in use, I will try again on Wednesday. If it's the same situation on Wednesday, I have to just keep checking so i can get it done.

There is one narrow counter top in my bldg. laundry room. But I never use it and always take my stuff back to my apt. to fold.
Also nobody in my bldg. stays in the laundry room between cycles to wait for the machines. But I do remember my grandmother doing that her bldg. when I visited her as a teenager.
I just did my laundry. I love the sense of accomplishment when I finish it. $4 for the wash and dry. We have 6 washers and 5 dryers for about 150 apartments. We are suppose to have kept laundry hours but rarely is the laundry room locked. I still try to keep to them to be considerate of the people who live on that floor but a lot of people don't because they don't really care.
I throw everything in together and don't wear reds so I don't have to do a separate load for them
I toss them together (well integrated) and I too have learned to avoid reds and maroons. Our 46 pound washers make it uneconomical to use separate smaller loads. Our 16 pounders cost 80% of the big ones.
