I have an honest and serious question.

How come the subway system in say, London, is so nice and clean and the one in NYC is a massive $htihole?

Is it because people in London get taxed to death? (serious question)

edit - it seems like the monthly pass for the London tube is just about the same price as the monthly pass in NYC.

So was Giuliani mayor of nearly every major American city in that time period or what?

Am thinking you're confused. Am not sure what you're running your mouth about.

What would be sustainable to you? Taxing the poor? I’m sorry to break it to you, but rich people care more about where they live than what they are taxed. That is why NYC is growing, despite our high taxes. There will be the occasional people who move to NJ or CT, but for everyone that leaves another 2 will take their place. I mean, just look at our bat**** real estate market. Williamaburg is ugly as sin, and most of it is inconvenient to get to Manhattan by transit. Yet transplants are still tripping over themselves to get half a closet there, or on the LES or in any other “trendy” neighborhood.

Your kind has been spewing this nonsense about the rich fleeing taxes, as more and more wealth pours into the city. What will it take for you to stop lying and admit the truth? The rich will barely feel this tax, let alone flee the city because of it. The only ones tax burdened in state are the middle class. They are the ones leaving the city as the rich push them out. Providing them with a more reliable MTA will make impact on their lives, and help them stay.

and the MTA only exists because it is a money leech from the TBTA. Seperate that from NYCT again and the whole system goes belly up.

New York Politicians will continue to bleed the middle class and the wealthy to run a substandard cheap subway system.
And NYCT has an 80% fate recovery rate, with much lower fares. What’s your point? The money leeches at the MTA are the LIRR, MetroNorth and the Express busses. Funnily enough, the money leeches at MTA services the richest NYers who usually vote Republican and oppose more transit funding.

You do realize the prices quoted in the tubes website are in pounds right? The cheapest monthly pass is 126 pounds which equals $164. That only covers zone 1-2, meaning just the city center. Imagine paying that much just to ride the subway in midtown? Sounds ridiculous to a NYer, right? An accrute comparison to our monthly pass would be the zone 1-6 monthly pass, which is 231 pounds, or $301. As you can see, the London tube has much higher fares. Implementing such a system here in NYC would price the poor out of the subway, as they are the ones who live in what would be the outer zones here in NYC. In London, that’s not a huge problem because their bus system picks up the slack with cheaper fares.

In addition to higher fares, London actually gets sufficient government funding and they don’t have to deal with the expenses of 3 decades of deferred maintenance, health benefits for all employees, ridiculous union rules, and politicians who play ping pong over who’s in charge of their transit system. Transport for London main priority is transit. the MTA’s piroity is to function as a job’s program for the governors voting bloc, make the governor look good when it manages to do something right, a piggy bank for pet projects, and allow the governor to wash his hands of responsibility when things go wrong. Transit is just a small afterthought to the MTA.

Places with the lowest tax bases tend to be the least developed. This is NYC, not Somalia and not Mississippi.
I like it!

Then price the poor out.

It's part of London's charm.

Didn't Debozo say that the MTA is controlled by Cuomo and Albany?

The man *loves* to run his mouth and doesn't know what he's saying half of the time.
