Book, use Sleepy's or Macy's for testing to see how firm you want it. (Yes, the salesmen are unbearably pushy...worst was some old goof at P.C Richards) and then buy online cheaply. (read customer reviews on softness.)
Good advice! This is exactly what I did 2 years ago when I bought my S&F Lux bed! I was coming off a serious herniated back so I wasn't trying to 'cheap' out on my bed because I needed some serious support for my back. I tried out the models at Macys and ended up buying the bed on US-Mattress.com. Sleepys sales guys were too damn pushy when all I wanted to do was try out the beds.
May want to look into an "organic mattress". They are made of natural rubber and have no odors. Supposedly they last a long time, ~ 15+ years before "sagging".. Ours is two years old only and hasn't shown any signs of sagging... We got it in a store in Chicago.
I went to Raymour and Flanigan. I wanted to pay a little more for quality. Most of the people I talked to said they were good quality and I wanted everything in a one-stop shop.
I have a Queen size bed. The mattress was $1200 but they lowered it to $1,000. Was a bit pricey, but I sleep so soundly and it's built really firm. Hopefully I won't have to buy another mattress for at least another 10 years. (5 years if I get married)
Dude we can tell people until we are blue in the face but no one listens.
All these other stores have ridiculous mark ups for the same exact thing Costco is selling. It's fine, we saved money lol.
Can you try the mattresses at Costco? For some reason I don't recall seeing a mattress section in the stores I've been to.
