Why can't people stop looking at their phones walking on subway stairs?

I think the worst station is Harrison PATH station, almost 1/2 the folks that get off and walk down stairs is reading their phones converging into this narrow stair case.

That's because Harrison is a poorly designed and massively overloaded station. One measly staircase per platform full of people at once in a neighborhood with rapid population growth. You can't hurry up even if you want to, so while at a snail's pace people just pass the time by using their phones.

I think a brand new station is going to open soon for Harrison though to accommodate the people problem

I'm one of those rare birds who doesn't use my phone while walking, standing in line, etc. So I occasionally "eavesdrop" on those who do, just to see what important stuff they're doing! Recently I was behind a man in line at Panda Express, who was busily tapping away at his phone - I looked at his screen (since it's in my face anyway), and he was literally typing random numbers like "000000999999" into his calculator. I actually felt sorry for the dude, because that's REALLY sad.

Totally off topic, but what do you mean "nowadays?" Generation gaps these days are getting BIGGER, not SMALLER - mostly due to women actually getting educations, working, and waiting to marry/have children. And I highly doubt there are many grandparents under 27, since that would require two consecutive generations having kids @ 13-14. The youngest grandmother I've known was 34, since she was 15 and her daughter was 19 when they had their first children. Anyway, just had to comment on that!

It was designed for what Harrison used to be. 20, even 10 years ago, who the hell wanted to live in Harrison? Most people wouldn't park and leave their cars there all day to catch the train. It was full of crumbling, abandoned warehouses. I knew someone who lived there. They had so many mice and rats in their apartment that they could never win against them and finally left.

Now they are building the new station and a lot of the old stuff was demolished and residential properties are being put up, and they built the hockey stadium, which attracted people. There are stores and places to eat now within sight of the train, but it's all really new.

This worst are people who are on their phone, know if they enter the subway their connection will drop, so they STOP right in front of the subway stairs, blocking the entrance, while they finish their conversation.
