Is East New York the new Harlem?

Welcome to Brooklyn's East New York, where working-class families can find apartments loaded with granite countertops, bamboo floors, French door closets, and Crate and Barrel sinks for prices ranging from $110,500 studios to $350,000 three-bedrooms.

Selling homes in the area for the past 15 years, Ho has seen the neighborhood go from good to bad to worse to the current renaissance. In the early 1990s, drug sales and carjackings were as prevalent as eviction notices and buildings with no heat. Now, ground-up construction, condo conversions and a huge commercial shopping center have turned this often-maligned urban outpost on the city's fringe into an emerging neighborhood where home ownership has become a priority instead of a pipe dream.

East New York is improving. Although I don't really get the comparison to Harlem. What because they are both predominately black neighborhoods? Seems a little lame to be comparing them. Plus as bad Harlem ever was, East New York was always much worse.

I would disagree. The Bradhurst section of Harlem in the 70's could match up with anything...including the "killing fields" of ENY in the early 1990's.

Well at least Harlem had some cool points. I could imagine there was some cool stuff going on culturally in the 70's. What the hell would you do in East New York, besides hope not to die?

The only reason ENY has so many murders is because its so darn big. You aren't an automatic homicide victim. You are more likely to die in Hunts Point.

Harlem at is worst was as bad as anything. I doubt you would find much there in the 70's. Well, maybe besides junkies.

I'm not exactly disagreeing with you. Again my main thing is that I don't exactly get the comparison. Besides both being neighborhoods that were much worse at one point and are both predominately black. The housing stock (a lot more houses in ENY) isn't even similar. Also Harlem is a lot closer to more attractive areas. East new York is FAR. Also Harlem at least has some positive history and cultural impact. That's why I find the comparison a little off.

There were some interesting things going on in Harlem in the 70's arts-wise. Granted it was amongst the mess of drugs and crime. But then again, that's been the case throughout much of the history of the area.

I've never been to ENY, but wouldn't distance make it hard for it to become the next Harlem? It's seems like a simple "NO" to me.
