So I like to study speech patterns and how they vary from region to region, city to city. To me, as someone who isn't originally from here, the NY accent sounds like a mix of the accents found in Boston and Philadelphia with stronger influence from the Boston side. The black populations in NYC and the Bean sound exactly the same.

I know some of y'all probably can't fathom NYC being influenced by another American city but I see a lot of influences from other parts of the country here.

Thoughts?

No. Remember the accent is old and people were long horse rides away from each other. Similar demographics so similar accents.

And, take it from someone who has lived in both places for long periods of time, you'd be wrong. The Boston accent is a distinct amalgam of English ethnics (early American history) and Irish influences (with very little Italian). The New York accent you're talking about is highly influenced by Jewish (Yiddish) and Italian dialects. Providence, while much closer to Boston linguistically, also exhibits some of the same Italian/Sicilian influences as New York/North Jersey.

I'd don't know where the Eastern PA/South Jersey/Delaware/Maryland accent comes from, but it's frightening! LOL. Just kidding; I just love listening to people in old John Waters movies.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't say that the NY accent is a combination of the two so much as it is on a continuum between the two. And I agree that it has somewhat more affinity with Boston.

New York and Boston accents are similar but separate accents. Philly accent is sort of like a watered down New York accent.
