Default Get a look at this.

What are you trying to say, DC? What are you trying to say?

I don't think it got anything to do if people eat down there or not. Rats don't just eat food. There eat basicly anything. The underground is huge dumpster...lol....

the metro closes their stations at midnight to clean the system. i'll take 1 or 2 rats over not being able to get home from the city at 4 AM from partying.

I've been to DC and their train stations are clean as hell.

Huh. I've seen rodents quite a few times on the Metro tracks here in DC. Hell, I see rats all the time everywhere in DC (even the wealthy neighborhoods). In my visits to NYC, I can't recall seeing any rats.

However, I'll admit the DC trains look cleaner (and are more comfortable) than the hard-seat ones in NYC.

How often does the MTA clean the subway stations anyway?

I use the word "clean" cautiously.

You don't see the folks with the brooms and dustpans in the stations? They give the stations a real thorough cleaning with that equipment.

Yeah, right.

Good question. On my last visit, they were washing down, or at least spraying, the ground pretty late at night. Then the following night I leaned up against a wall then quickly jerked myself back up thinking it was filthy and it wasn't. I actually ran my finger down the tile (the 79th st. stop) and it was spotless! I was shocked. Did I just get lucky or are they trying to keep them a little cleaner.

It can't be that frequently. What makes the stations look really dirty is usually the water leaking into the stations and causing stains all over the tile on the walls. The gum everywhere on the station-floor along with the buildup of grime doesn't help either.

The steel columns that you'll see everywhere in the subway in Manhattan often look like they need a new coat of paint. This usually adds to the feeling of dirty-ness.

I know the cleaning of the actual subway cars is pretty much a joke, thats why the inside of the cars often look pretty dirty. I live at the end of the 4 line, so I get to watch how the cleaning happens on a pretty regular basis. They rarely mop the floor (and if they do mop it, it is only for a small portion of the train). Most of the time the cleaning people just take their brooms and pick up some of the larger debris on the train.

How about this: Will the MTA ever ban eating and drinking in the subways? I know that will help make the stations look a HELL of a lot better.

I know the L line is cleaned every time it terminates at 14th st-8th ave. however, this usually consists of sweeping up newspapers (i.e. only big stuff, which isn't really cleaning) and occasionally mopping (during rush hours, usually around all the people who have already filled up the seats.) After the MTA employees have left I'm hard pressed to notice a difference, except now the floor is dirty and damp as well. : )
