So, if I wanted to put down a down-payment or some sort of rent-to-own set-up for a house around Rego Park, Queens (let's say a 5-10 minute walk from the Rego Park Subway) what price range would I be looking at?

A house should be in the range of $800,000 to $1.3 million. It's not hard to find out price ranges with Streeteasy, Zillow, etc.

Or just google "house for sale Rego Park"

Also, when you are buying a house, you need both the down payment AND the ability to pay back and qualify for the entire mortgage. There are usually mortgage calculators on the real estate sites. They will suggest a down payment of some certain percentage, and then calculate the rest using the current interest rate. Don't forget that you will also need to pay real estate taxes and you will have expenses to maintain the home.

Set a price range that you can afford and still have some money left to manage your day to day expenses. Don't put all money in the house, is not worth it. Buying a house should be what you are comfortable on spending, not simply because you expect the house to raise in value for future.

Go right back to square one. You are not ready to own a home. I say this based on the question you are posing.
