prospect heights and midwood
Hi,
I'm moving to NYC soon and am going up there next weekend to look around at neighborhoods. I know which ones to avoid, but I keep seeing lots of things available in midwood and also prospect heights. I know crown heights can be skethcy, but what about prospect heights.
demographic info about me that might make a difference...
2 white lesbians, late 30s, 9 month old baby
thanks

I find Midwood to be the nicer of the two.

Midwood is quite nice. If you're renting you're probably looking at Ocean Ave, or Ocean Parkway which are lined with mostly 6-story apartment buildings. Most of the streets contain very attractive, large single-family homes with actual lawns and backyards. It's almost semi-suburban, but the houses are older and more majestic.
Avenue M, Avenue J, Avenue P and Kings Highway are the main commercial drags where you'll find all of your basic necessities. And the best pizza in NYC is supposed to be at DiFara's on Avenue J. Of course opinions vary.... this is Brooklyn pizza we're talking about
The Q Train gets you to Midtown in about 40 minutes. The B is a weekday express you can catch at King's Highway or Newkirk and will get you there about 15 minutes faster.
There is also a large Jewish population. It seems as if there is a synagogue or yeshiva on every corner. If you aren't looking for hip amenities and prefer a more family-friendly area, Midwood is a solid choice.

From what I've read, the Orthodox Jewish community is not that tolerant of homosexuality. Of course, someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But Midwood is very orthodox and maybe not the best place for 2 lesbians and a child??

Excellent point Henna. I did not read the original post close enough to even catch that. You may want to avoid areas with large Orthodox communities. Although they probably impose no physical danger I have a homosexual friend who lives in South Williamsburg (below Broadway) and they tell me they are regularly hissed at (literally, like a snake would hiss) by Orthodox families and their children.
Mostly harmless but I would imagine it would be pretty grating after a while. No different than being catcalled if you are a woman or being called a "snowflake" for being white in a minority neighborhood.

To the OP: There are blocks in Midwood where you will not find a single Hasidic Jew, and others where the entire block is Hasidic (I went to Midwood HS and lived acouple blocks away). Go to whatever block you want to live on and figure out if it will work for you. An insular, Hasidic block where you might face discrimination will be noticeable right away, because if this is the case, you will likely not see kids of other ethnic backgrounds playing on the street. If you go to a block where there are acouple of 4 or 5 story buildings and you see some pakistani, black, asian, or russian kids playing, (common if not prevalent in Midwood) you will not face any discrimination, you will be anonymous and blend in with the diversity of the block

I live in Midwood. It's certainly the more suburban-looking neighborhood than Prospect Heights, which is basically a less expensive Park Slope on the other side of Flatbush Avenue. Those demographics really shouldn't make a difference in either neighborhood.
