alternate side street parking
I saw mention of this on another board regarding parking in Brooklynearlier today and tried to find out some info about it, but couldn't find what I was looking for.
In the message I saw, some people said in their neighborhood it was 2 times a week. In other neighborhoods, it can be 4 times a week. Where can I find this info? Depending on what kind of apartment we find (like if it has parking for instance or a lot nearby), this could greatly affect where we live. Particularly because I saw something about how it has to be moved after 8am... after 8? it really does just seem like a ploy by the NYC govt revenue from tickets.
Does queens have this crap too?
any info would be appreciated.

As far as I know, there is no place on line that lists what the regulations are by neighborhood, esp. since the times vary every few blocks. On my block, one side street cleaning is 8:30am-10am on Wed. and the other side is the same time Thurs. But if you go up a block, it is Mondays from 9:30-11am and the other side it's the same time on Tuesdays.
Some neighborhoods have no street cleaning at all- but this is generally the more suburban neighborhoods in Queens (like Middle Village).
The city does actually clean the streets when they say they will, so I am happy enough to have the cleaning done.

When you say that they clean it from 8:30 to 11, does that mean that after 11, you have to move your car back to the other side of the street or you get a ticket?
I'm just trying to figure this out because they didn't have this sort of thing where I lived in DC and they don't have it here in Atlanta either.
I know that NYC is notorious for giving out parking tickets so I just want to make sure I know what the deal is.
thanks!

During the cleaning times, no one is allowed to park on that side. The street must be clear of all cars. So the time you have to be concerned about is just before the cleaning starts, or you'll get a ticket if you are parked there and they are trying to clean. Once they are done cleaning, say, at 11am, then you can park there until just before they clean it again (either a week later in some neighborhoods, or 2-3 days later in others).
Does that make sense? Sometimes it confuses me too. Once before I went on vacation and I was going to have to ask a friend to move my car for me, I even had to draw myself pictures of the signs on each side of the street to figure out where and when to ask him to move it.

I feel like I'm going to get lots of tickets...
ok...just to clear things up in my head (and between packing, trying to find a place to move, trying to find a job for myself and everything else, myhead is foggy these days )...
Say I'm parked on the left side of the street. The left side of the street is scheduled to be cleaned from 8-11 on a Tuesday.
At 7:00 on Tuesday, can I park on the right side of the street and just stay there until it's the right sides turn to be cleaned?
Sorry for all the silly questions.

Every neighborhood is different. Not only with days, but with respect to times, as well. You have GOT to look at the signs.

of course i will look at the signs, but if i am going to have to move my car at 11am to the other side of the street, that is going to be a problem as I am going to be at work (taking public tran so car will stay behind).
if the street cleaning is that much of a pain in the butt, will try to find someplace that either has parking in the unit or someplace near a garage/lot.

Now you're beginning to realize why many New Yorkers don't have cars.
