My building is right next to the river, also our whole area surrounded by the river, with very nice views of Manhattan. Also, a big green , many beuitiful trees backyard right next to the windows. And a park right across of our building, with huge trees. So, when is hut and humid and with no wind around, we have a plenty of mosquitoes.
Please tell me that mosquitoes are rampant oiutdoors these last two weeks, I have a passel of bites that itch like crazy, and I am petrified they might be bedbug bites. I have torn apart the bed for dawn inspections several times and found no bugs. On the other hand I have not seen a mosquito either.
The bites that itch like crazy for days are probably from gnats (A/K/A black flies or "no see ums"). They are smaller than regular screens can contain. But you can buy special screens that prevent gnats from entering.
My mosquito bites often come on looking like hives and then open up and suppurate for 2 weeks, sometimes even leaving a scar.
Like Javawood, I cannot do backyard barbecues or trips to Fire Island anymore...the price of weeks of infected bites is too high. I am beginning to wonder whether I can even leave Manhattan Island.
But I guess to ease my mind, I will have to set up a couple carbon dioxide generators inside of slippery bedbug traps, big pain in the ass. I have never caught a BB and I hope I never do, but I've got my yeast ready to go. Either that or a lot of Valium.
I read some reviews of those bait products (designed for detection rather than extermination) and some people said that in spite of their actually SEEING bedbugs, the trap never actually caught one.
I called the manufacturer and asked "What is the bait?" since I know that bedbugs are really attracted only to carbon dioxide.
She answered "Bedbug bait"
I replied "Yes, but what is it actually"
She came back with "A bait that attracts bedbugs."
I honestly am reporting word for word.
I realized I wasn't going to get a straight answer and abandoned the call.
