Unfortunately this Ray's, on 6th Ave and 11th St., is a shadow of its former glory. It used to be one of the very best, worth a special trip. But 5, maybe 10 years ago something happened. Maybe the place was sold to a new owner. But the pizza you are reading about in the clippings on wall bears little resemblance to the pizza you are eating. Nowadays I'd rate it as slightly above average.
While it does have some detractors, the pizza at Sal and Carmine's on Broadway between 101st and 102nd (formerly between 94th and 95th for those of you who remember) is still made by the same guys I bought it from 35 years ago. Good stuff.
And another plug for Mariella's on 3rd Ave and 16th St.

Nathan's hot dogs with Kraut and deli mustard are the best hot dogs and their fries are the best french fries in America. Although a New Yorker I can tell you the best Pizza I've had in the United States is Frank Pepe in New Haven, Connecticut. Google it, it's worth the drive.

Amen about Dominos, PH, Sbarro and adding Pappa Johns They are only useful because of the later hours of delivery (I live on LI-11p delivery is a privilege) The local pizzeria/restaurant around my way Marios is very good. I'm a specialty pizza lover, but they also do Margarita very well. Ran by Italians
When in NYC, I'm also a lover of dirty water 'cart' dogs. Mustard, onions, relish and sometimes 'kraut. No wonder I have to take Prilosec!

Thank you for keeping this thread alive, since I'll need it for when I go back to NYC.

In East New York Brooklyn: Slevo's on Blake ave and Sheffield
In Manhattan: Koronet, it is on Broadway and maybe 109th street. The slices there are HUGE. I live in Las Vegas now and always talk about those pizza shops.

In Manhattan, by the slice, I'd recommend Abitino's, which has a few locations, including Turtle Bay and Murray Hill on 2nd Avenue. They offer regular and Sicilian slices, though I always have to buy a whole pie, since I don't do dairy, but that's okay.
For a pie place, Tontonno's is great as well. They're also on 2nd Avenue, in the 20s and the 80s, as well as Brooklyn and Westchester.
