Excuse me, but I just thought I'd mention that, yet again, despite the millions of dollars the city spends on surveillance, such as cameras spying on every innocent citizen, it failed to avert the attack from the bike-path terrorist, just like it failed, for instance, with the Times Square bomber, where we were saved only by alert New Yorkers.
"millions of dollars" is a sad amount to achieve an effective surveillance system for a city size of NYC. It has to be 10xed to make it work, barely.
If we can persuade trump to stay out of NYC during his presidency, the city might be able to cut the security cost and invest it into the surveillance system.
Vehicles have now become a modern means of weapon of mass destruction. An affordable way to prevent it from occurring is to build rails to separate pedestrian/biker lanes from vehicle lanes. You won't be able to jaywalk though.

We need to bring back racial profiling, it is an effective method in catching criminals/terrorists before they commit heinous acts.
And how would that prevented this murderer for committing this crime? Any with a vehicle can easily mow people down in busy areas. A lot of those Muslims from the Russian Federation (Chechnya, Dagestan etc.) and the former USSR are ethnic whites. Racial profiling SHOULD NOT be used. It wouldn't have prevented the Boston bombing.
