I don't think that really matters, 3 bedrooms for that price would be a good deal in NYC even if the building is a giant phallus
It does matter. Far Rockaway overall is ugly. For the most part, only parts of the western portion are nice looking like portions of Belle Harbor and obviously Neponsit. The A subway doesn't help matters. Dark and dreary. The houses have that cheap hideous vinyl siding. It's like the Coney Island of Queens in that regard. Coney Island should be blown up and re-done from scratch. Ugly dated looking housing projects all over the place. That's exactly what most of Far Rockaway looks like. When I think of *waterfront* property, Neponsit, Manhattan Beach and such areas come to mind. Nice houses, clean sidewalks and so on.

People who are poor and need affordable housing really don't care about that stuff
We have never spent more than 30% on rent, usually far less. Last place we hit close to 30% and decided that was too much so we moved for cheaper digs.
Rockaways near 116th st might be a good place to start. Plenty of places to run errands, shop, eat, etc..You have access to the MTA train and the new Ferry to the city. Rents area little more expensive but safer for you both. Good Luck.
Thanks all!
We decided we don't need to live in far rockaway. I'll have a car and we're planning on getting an apartment with an underground garage or street level lot in kew gardens or forest hills, or a similar neighborhood somewhere in central Queens like richmond hill or briarwood (or maybe certain nicer parts of south Brooklyn). Although I'll be working about 10-12 miles away, I don't think it's a big deal, I'm expecting horrid traffic and I'm alright with that. We want safety and a homey feel over proximity. Thanks all!

Hopefully they let you park in the hospital parking lot, because parking on the street around there sucks. Very limited spaces on the street.
