The Heights, Elmhurst and Corona hung out all over.
Yes it was called bazooka. In those days Roosevelt Avenue was for female hookers and they pimps were open about it. Male hookers hung out on 37th road aka VASELINE alley. Drag queen hookers used the side streets.

I have a good friend who has lived all his life in Jackson Heights. From what he has told me he liked the neighborhood better when he was younger (which would have been in the 70s & 80s).

I was born in the elmhurst neighborhood then my family moved. But the reason they moved was because of the mass amounts of cocaine flooding our building. I remember one week, while lookibg out of my window as a toddler, two sleepys trucks pulled over by police. Beds were pulled out and searched. Tons of cocaine were found. My parents always told me to stay away from roosevelt avenue. Indeed, there were hookers lining up the street at all times of the day. Loud colombian music would be played 24/7, partys were hosted seemingly everyday, and everyone was high. At least thats what it seemed like to me. I visited the area recently and i cant say much has changed. I still get the same feeling of a lurking criminal element, its just very under the radar now.but it always has been, in a sense.

I like going a few times a year for the Colombian restaurants and bakeries. My wife is Colombian. Very different atmosphere at night though. Definitely seedy still. Not dangerous but seedy big time. And yes in Colombia there is a drug that they call "Basuco" which is similar to crack.

I don't find the area to be seedy, it just has some tacky looking businesses.

I guess you haven't been on Roosevelt after hours. Trannies to your left, creepy men, and dudes trying to sell you social security #s. That's pretty seedy in my book.

There is more crimes in queens nowadays then there was back in the 80s. When I was younger, I never really heard anything bad about queens. The biggest problems were harlem, bed stuy, flatbush, the south bronx, the grand concourse, parts of midtown Manhattan because of all of the homeless people. Queens did and still does have a lot of prostitutes though. Especially when you headed toward citi field (Shea stadium ). Nowadays, prostitution is mostly in other parts flushing. Citi field area is still not the greatest today but not much prostitution there anymore just mostly illegals and terrible roads.
