At an Overcrowded School in Park Slope, No One Wants to Leave - The New York Times

Middle schools are in many ways just as segregated as many in parts of Manhattan.

Park Slope and other close areas of Brooklyn have been seeing an exodus of families to certain parts of New Jersey (such as Maplewood, Montclair, etc...) to such an extent it has become an inside joke.

Montclair, New Jersey = Park Slope West?: Gothamist

1) Your NY Times article is five years out of date, and makes less sense now than it once did, especially considering that as you've said...

2)...families are leaving for cheaper suburbs like Montclair or Maplewood. But this has been true for years. The old joke I heard twenty years ago was that the path was Upper West Side as singles and DINKs, Park Slope with toddlers, and Montclair with school-age kids. And I know several people who've literally done it that way. Old news.

3) Elementary school placement is based on address, and most schools with wait lists do have a good deal of 'melt' from their waiting lists (if they have them) over the summer. Middle schools anywhere in NYC with application instead zoned admissions is difficult. That's as true in Manhattan's District 2 and District 3 middle schools as Brooklyn's District 15. It just comes with the territory. Either OP will live with that in the more affluent city neighborhoods or choose to go private.

4) Park Slope is definitely not cheap for sure. But is it relatively cheaper that what you'd pay for the same space in Manhattan on the UWS or Tribeca or Soho? I think it is.

Then you're not looking very hard. They are definitely there. But they are not flamboyant, stereotypical, flaming, whatever you want to call it. And yes, some are even there raising kids, like the OP wants to do. As to the stylve/vibe of the area that is a matter of taste, no question. But again, comparing it Tribeca, Soho, the Village, the UWS, I don't see a massive difference. It is true that that these bohos can sport similar styles, but this style is -- of which I think you are overly harsh -- pretty common among affluent urbanites.

You may not like it, and I grant that it can be too damn precious sometimes, but I'd still recommend the OP give the neighborhood a serious looksee.
