These clowns are a joke, they are such a waste of your metrocard fare's salary and pension to them. The politicians want to seem like like they're doing something about slow trains but this is throwing away resources.

"Platform Controllers" are the MTA workers assigned to subway stations with a reflective vest and a stupid little flashlight that they wave up and down all day long like mental patients. Presumably, they're there to get people in and out of the cars so doors don't get held up and the train can get out of the station.

But take a second to watch them, and you'll see that they are completely ignored. People jam into cars as usual and hold doors as usual, they provide absolutely ZERO VALUE ADDED to train efficiency. Instead of blowing $200K per year per station on PC's, why don't they use that money for something that will actually make a difference like getting the "sick passenger" the heck of the train when it happens or proactively replacing/maintaining old signal hardware?

You know, the MTA eliminated many token booth clerk jobs. In doing so, they had to keep those missing job numbers somewhere else. They have these same type of positions, at the turnstiles , in some stations. Helpers, to help customers get through. Its like what they do, to create jobs, MTA is probably getting some type of break for hiring

Many see it as a senseless waste of money to hire someone for this position, but it is one less person on Welfare,EBT,Public Housing, welfare hotel. These senseless jobs, even in the Parks Department with PEP Officers/Security. I sit there in amazement, how the Parks Department hire these "Whistle Blowers" to babysit city parks. These jobs, are jobs that give someone the ability to survive on their own paycheck, and contribute to the economy. Again, it is one less person on Welfare,EBT,Public Housing, welfare hotel.

I don't understand why that person in the picture has a Microphone in her hands. Was she rapping/singing or something? I could only imagine, "Blah blah blah blah blah!"

At certain stations it's necessary because the platforms are so packed the conductor can't tell when it's good to go unless that light is shined because there are so many people forced to walk on the yellow tape just to get around to the exit they need to be at. The stations are not wide enough and this was a construction error from when the stations were first built.

Have you ever met a conductor that cared? The conductor pushes the button and if the door jams onto somebody's purse or arm he just keeps jamming the button until they all close. The platform controller doesn't save any time here because the people are going to take the time it needs to crush every bone in that subway car until they can squeeze in

They had to only due to Union negotiated rules and lobbying. Not because of any other reason - like common sense or economics.

Not really.

Many passenger railroads/subways have similar positions so it isn't as if the thing is entirely new. In fact *think* the NYC subways had some sort of "platform agents" or whatever going back to the 1940's or so.

Anyway what is the beef for some people? On the one hand everyone is screaming about loss of jobs due to downsizing or whatever, then they complain when those affected by technology or whatever are moved to another job.

Also for the record token booth agents acted as a set of eyes/ears at stations. Leaving places totally abandoned as many are today often does not make people feel safe.
