Bezos could put his HQ in Amarillo - He doesn't want to risk or fight the current. The most wide and deep scientific apparatus ever invented in the history of the planet is scattered in more remote areas. I am speaking about the US military. They make crazy **** and it comes out of towns with one stop light.
So, the question is what does this really all mean? I believe it means the haves will "have" and the nots "not"..

Amazon like Google and the rest will throw NYC and others same bones they did for Seattle and CA; that is promises or whatever to hire local "disadvantage" or whatever minorities in the name of equality and so forth. But make no mistake a bulk of newly hired talent won't be Tyrone from the projects who took some coding classes offered by the city or even company itself. Rather it will be more of the same already; tech talent moving around the country and or world to relocate where needed.
NYC has plenty of local talent in terms of Asians and Jews. It is silly to dismissed NYC as a hub for tech talent. The finance sector will face increased pressure to increase compensation for tech talent that isn't quantitative trader.
The E and M trains go to LIC. so does the F train. So does the R train. So does the 7 train and the G train coming from Brooklyn. So does the LIRR. The LIRR alone is 4 tracks. The 7 train is two tracks. The g train is two tracks. The F train is two tracks at Queens Bridge.
Yeah, not sure why people said it is not convenient. There are many different trains and buses routed to go there, very convenient. Not to mention, there are couple ferries. You can take the ferry from Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn directly to there without hassle, super fast. I travel by G train from Park Slope, Brooklyn to LIC taking about 30 minutes. It skips Manhattan. The "F", "W", "M", "R", "7", "E" and "N" trains across from Manhattan to there is less than 10 minutes. If you live in Long Island, you can the LIRR to LIC directly, super fast.
I think Amazon pick LIC because of its convenience.

There some of you go again with that racism (which exactly what it is) assuming *all* Jews and Asians are some how inherently more intelligent or whatever than whites, blacks, Latino-Hispanics or any one else. It just isn't true, so please stop spreading that nonsense.
A look at overall Asian poverty rates for New York much less entire nation should tell you something. Ditto for large portions of the Jewish faith. Hint, the "poorest" area of USA as measured by welfare/aid recipients is Kiryas Joel/Monroe County.
See just as many Asians digging though garbage as any other group, so please spare me how magically smart they all are, again because it just isn't true.
Even if it *WERE* true there is no indication the supposed vast numbers of smart Asians and Jews you seem to believe are in NYC area have any interest in tech sector, and or have capabilities/desired traits to take such employment.
West coast/California has a large Asian population and they are *STILL* facing a shortage of tech workers.
It never ceases to amaze some of you have the nerve to call people like me racist, when you make all sorts of assumptions merely based upon same factors. Saying all Asians are smart is no different than saying all blacks can tap dance, like watermelon, can play basketball, have big lips and nappy hair.
How is this any different from when Rockefeller left Cleveland for New York?
John D. Rockefeller had built his empire and wealth out of Cleveland, OH. In return he found himself and family very badly abused.
JDR had a residence in New York (among other places), but still kept a home in Cleveland. When is wife became ill and thus couldn't travel back to NY, JDR remained by her side, this caused him to go over the tax residency period, so in a political scoring move Cleveland sent him an income tax bill.
JDR already had paid his taxes in NY and thus shouldn't have been taxed again, but never the less Cleveland persisted. They ended up losing in court when SCOTUS sided with JDR. But the thing left a nasty taste in his mouth. As it was his wife did die after her illness, but her burial had to wait five months because JDR didn't wish to risk Cleveland attempting to tax him again.
Amazon pays taxes wherever it has a duty and or whatever to do so. What it objects to (as would any sane person or business) is being taxed heavily to promote some sort of Robin Hood SJW policies; extract more from those who have in order to give it away to those that don't.
Again this might not be so bad if Amazon like any other company or person who earns wasn't already taxed up the wazoo. Adding more taxes is just piling on, which explains why so many businesses and or wealthy persons are or have hightailed it out of New York.

Good post. You also have lot of Hasidics on welfare or who otherwise graduate from their religious schools with little or nothing in the way of English or basic math skills. NYC and the DC areas are well known places where one can attract national and global talent. The research universities nearby are an added plus, as students from Columbia, Cornell, John Hopkins, and Georgetown, if they are highly skilled can get Amazon to sponsor them for visas.

This is true worldwide. Public health systems in Europe now have smartphone apps where one can make appointments online. Insurance companies here in Spain also have apps that allow their clients to make doctor or dental appointments online, as do private hospital systems. Administrative government functions have moved their appointment setting online, and now one can take the written driver's license test online.
The need to upgrade infrastructure to digital is not just an European or an American thing, it is happening on all continents.

You hit the nail on the head. I have been programming since the 70's as a hobby. Why?
No schools,no internships, zilch,nada,nothing! The education system needs to ramp up its
vocational and technical schools and drop courses like getting dressed,how to watch television and the art of
walking being offered at Ivy league schools. Fraggin Refards.....
