I live in Spain. Things are absolutely fine in Barcelona. Lots of investment here, and lots of foreigners here. Which is how they make their money. The economy is growing here and lots of wealthy foreigners are buying here.
Correction. You live in Catalonia, which might as well be another country. It is no secret that outside of Catalonia, Spain has been struggling, which is why they want to succeed in the first place (Catalonia that is).

Europe does not have poor economic conditions. Business is not being strangled. I know because I currently live in Europe, and I don't really on right wing fake news. Lots of banks have move to Frankfurt, and yes British individuals and businesses move all the time to Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.
What is the discount rate in Europe right now? They must have strong well capitalized banking system. The pillar of stability. US banks can't keep up.
I work in both the US and Europe. No fake news source here.

Catalonia is not another country, and the succession has gone nowhere. Problem is lots of people from other parts of Spain live in Catalonia (they vote) and so do lots of naturalized citizens (they vote). Those who preferred to remain with Spain were 53% of the vote last election. So pro independence parties were not able to get a clear majority, and pretty much all the major succession leaders have been arrested.
Outside of Catalonia, Madrid, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands have pretty good economies.

I know that but the Catalonia region in the north of Spain has always had the strongest economy and the rest of Spain has always been seen as leeches, similar to how the rich parts of Northern Italy (Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Piedmont, etc) wants to seceed from the rest of Italy and especially from Rome (Lazio) where the Italian government is located. Since Catalonians also feel that they have their own culture and language (Catalán), that also makes them feel non-Spanish, or rather Catalonian first and Spanish second. Believe me, I have a co-worker from Catalonia and he supports secession.

It all boils down to one thing, Spain has never been able to overcome the trauma of the civil war. there is no true Catalonia separatist movement from Spain, there is a movement to separate from "current Spain" and the monarchy and the Partido Popular. Catalonians know they are Spanish.
As a battle over taxes and "leeches" is the way Americans would see it as its replicate their own local arguments and cultural traditions but taxes is the least of the issues, this is a 300 year old battle between liberal Spain and the conservative one. between the monarchy and the republic.

Oh it isn't all about taxes, but don't think the rich Catalonian region doesn't feel as if it is being taken advantage of by Spain. They're the richest region in Spain, produce the most, but feel as if they receive the least. It's the same deal in Northern Italy, which is why they call Rome "ladroni" (thieves). You don't think it's about taxes... It most certainly is about taxes and money. Catalonians see themselves as Catalonians first and Spaniards second. I've lived in Europe in Italy in the North and followed these issues quite closely and even wrote a paper on the differences between the North and South of Italy, so I'm quite verse of this issue. Of course there are things like cultural differences and so on, but money is certainly a big one.
Spain does everything possible to quash any sort of separatist talk. I mean really... Spain would be a mess without Catalonia. It would be the equivalent of removing Lombardy and Milan (the financial capital from being part of Italy). Even with Catalonia, it's been a mess since the real estate bust. They haven't faced such severe austerity measures as say Greece or Portugal, but it hasn't been that pretty either.

Catalonia is not the richest part of Spain, the basque country is richer, and the richest one is actually the autonomous community of Madrid, stop repeating things without doing your research. In terms of GNP per capita, Catalonia ranks currently fourth behind Madrid, Basque Country and Navarre. (data of 2017).

I'm not repeating anything. Either way Spain has worked to quash any separatist movements by both Catalonia and the Basque country and yes both are rich parts of Spain. But no it has nothing to do with money.
In my mind the Basque country is tried to so hard to separate itself from Spain that it might as well not be apart of it, hence my comment about Catalonia being the richest region.

This issue has been going on for 300 years now, back then people traveled in donkeys and still they were arguing about the structural issues with the formation of the kindon of Spain, taxes was not an issue then and its not today.
it just sounds nicer to say is an economic issue than to say they want to desolve the kingdom, and have the British and all other monarchical country of Europe as ideological enemies.

the basque separatist movement is dead, they reached an agreement with he kingdom that works for them. Even that article uses the word "may" on its title. indicating its not the main reason and might not even be a reason at all.
