I'm no fan of Starbucks horrible excuse for coffee but I've noticed over the year's that they let people hang there for hours using the wifi, killing time, etc.

Why single out these 2 men? Why not just ask them to buy something or leave? Calling the cops is an extreme measure to use on loiterers.

Which is exactly why there was such a huge outrage. Honestly at a lot of Starbucks they will just give you the code to use the bathroom. They could have done that, or said we'll give you the code to use the bathroom if you buy something. Clearly since Starbucks allows people to loiter they cannot use that as an excuse, which is why the company accepted responsiblity.

This may seem like over the top. But it is probably cheaper than settling out of court for 100s of civil lawsuits or a class action. Management was probably aware a class action was headed their way. As I explained on the restroom thread this is the only way they can mitigate damages and lighten the burden of preponderance of evidence.

This incident, they are on the wrong side of preponderance of evidence. Who knows how many more incidents they have on file just in the past couple of months of this calendar year alone. Given this heavy handed response - I am guessing there were HUNDREDS of outstanding complaints. Very interesting to see how this will play out.

They already won from the PR standpoint. United Airlines could take a page out of their playbook.

Due to the nature of the business model as well as the establishment purpose itself, Loitering is going to be an uphill battle to prove.

The police did not have to cuff those guys. What happened to officer discretion?

At least in NYC, the cops will give them a " get outta here, scram" and call it a day. Managers of a coffee shop don't tell police what to do.

The police should be held accountable, too.they did not have to cuff the guys, unless the guys said that they were not leaving voluntarily.

You clearly haven’t watched the original video or the police chief’s explanation of exactly what transpired. Fyi, the Chief is black.

Being that people hangout in Starbucks for hours without buying anything, there was no reason for the manager to even kick them out.

According to this NY Times article, the men asked to use the bathroom, were told that it was only for paying customers, and then sat down without buying anything. The employees eventually asked them to leave and when the men refused, the employees called the police. The police asked the men to leave three times before arresting them.

On the 911 call, the Starbucks employee said that the men were refusing to make a purchase or leave.

According to the police commissioner, calls from businesses to remove people are not uncommon.

I've never seen Starbucks require people to make a purchase. That's the problem, because what Starbucks did to those men was done consistently.

You also saw in those videos white customers saying that those men hadn't done anything. Employees never should have asked them to leave, and never should have called the cops.

Starbucks know this, which is why they are closed May 29 for training purposes.
