I know there is lots to talk about regarding the above article, but one question I immediately had was why does the article say that she is legally entitled to rent out rooms on a short term basis as long as she is in the apartment? Doesn't NY have a 30 day minimum stay and that has been an issue for AirBnB here?

So the guy she was living with ended up adopted her so she can get his pension and rent stabilized apartment. How do you adopt a grown women and no way was she a daughter to him, more like wife

You can do Airbnb short term as long as you don’t rent out the whole apartment. She has a two bedroom, so she can rent the other room out

She’s a very smart con artist

The 30 day rule is for situation when the owner is not there. If the owner is there, the rule doesn't apply.

So long as the tenant is in the apartment, it is perfectly legal to do short term rentals in NYC. NYC compromised with Airbnb.

Yeah, I wonder why they chose adoption as opposed to marriage. Perhaps the laws are more clear on rent succession rights from a parent to a child. The whole thing seems like a well-thought out con, so I'm sure they chose whatever would be more efficient for them to not have anything contested.

I recall when this was going on. I knew she would win.

The only way to get her out is to burn the place down. Look at how she covered the stove burners up. That’s a fire hazard. She might burn it down herself. The lady looks crazy!

In most (maybe all?) adults can adopt another adult.

Gays and lesbians did it for decades until recently when domestic partnership and later same sex marriage became legal. It was the only other way to make someone legally "next of kin", which gave the adoptee certain rights.

In any event the woman refused to marry the old geezer ( I wonder why?), so in the end it was adoption. http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.s...th_new_yo.html

99% sure this rule predates the advent of AirBnB.

She is pre-hoarder with not very far to go to be rid of the "pre."

But she is well within her rights.
