^ There is one big disadvantage to moving from NYC to any of the places suggested in both post. That is lack of public transportation. A car may be a necessity not a luxury in these areas.

yes a car is often necessary, but the bigger picture of having an overwhelmingly better quality of life for you and your kids, good schools, clean air, safety, good schools, etc supercedes the expense of having a car. A car is a small part of the bigger picture.

A car is not a small part of the bigger picture in these places. It is a large part. Most of these places are not walkable like NYC. You may need a car just to go to the store. If the OP knows that she cannot afford a car in the very near future, she should look carefully at the areas that she may consider, if she would like to relocate outside of NYC.

Good information to know, but note that this thread was started back in March -- I'm guessing the OP has found a place by now .....

Das if you can provide a good education for your children, a safe community where they will not be attacked or roped into drugs/gangs/prison, clean air, clean streets, and a healthy lifestyle where the ghetto subculture is not normal, how is buying a car NOT a small price to pay? You can EASILY get a car payment of $50 a month for a good used vehicle, especially today..they can't give cars away. If the only thing that is preventing you from providing yourself and your children a good life away from the bad atmosphere of the city is a car, don't fret. The car is a very miniscule price to pay...don't be scared off by DAS. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by providing your family and yourself a better life.

^First I agree with squeezeboxgal, hopefully the OP has a place by now. Sobroguy in reference to your statement concerning scaring someone off, I'm a realist. She should be aware of that expense. You should know because you have mentioned that you own a car, that more is needed than just the $50 a month car payment.
Keep in mind that she has children, her priorities will be their primary physical needs first. So she must have enough to meet those needs, and then some for the car. Since she has received section 8, not just qualified for it, she must have had a great financial need. They don't just give those vouchers away anymore.

Yes agreed...and since she has that voucher she clearly has very little to lose as she is probably not succeeding here..so why not strive for a better life somewhere where she CAN provide good schools, clean air, and a healthy "normal" environment for her kids and herself? All because of the fear that she cannot afford a $50 car payment? Let's be real. I recommend investigating the transfer...the case worker can help you. Like I said..what do you have to lose exactly?

What about maintenance, gas, and insurance. Some states require that you take out car insurance, just to get a license in those states, this is even if you do not own a car. The premise is that they know you will have to drive, even if it is someone elses car. So the responsibility is on the driver not the owner of the vehicle. She would have to be able to afford this. The insurance is less than it would be in NYC but it and other expenses are relative.
