I'm joking, but it sounds like her son really could be innocent.

(Although I have no doubt that Airborneguy has his loaded gun on him at all times.) I'm talking most people...

It seems like what would have been more helpful would have been an alarm, or at least a more secure lock. From the text message from the neighbor, it seems he was able to just walk into the side door of the house.

What a weird coincidence that the neighbor is the mother of the guy in jail for the murder of the CT football player years ago (and I think they found the body at her house). Did anyone else read the story about her assuming a new identity and starting a relationship with a former juror in an attempt to overturn the conviction? Stranger than fiction for sure.
I carry 24/7 or have one close by. I have a few tactically-sound hiding spots in my home for "just in case" moments.

I clearly remember that case because it happened when I first became a cop and was working in the area. Very sad start and then it became strange when the mother did that. It's been in the news again recently fyi. That same perp is appealing again on different grounds to have his conviction tossed.

Burglars do not kill with hammers. Hammers indicate blind rage and hatred.

That's pretty much impossible these days, thanks to rampant abuses of commitment back in the day and a string of court decisions that have made involuntary long-term commitment pretty much impossible. Once someone is 18 years old, a parent has no control over his medical or health needs, and cannot force him to do a damn thing. And everything about his crime screams to me that he was one very, very sick puppy.

At best, the courts will usually just send the sick one to a psych ward for 72 hours, give him some meds, which he may or may not take, and kick him out on the streets. At worst, he ends up hurting someone and going into the criminal justice system, which is why jails and prisons are now effectively the biggest mental health care system in the U.S.

What happened to that professor is a shame. So is what's happening every day to the mentally ill. That's a disgrace.

I remember the murder but hadn't heard about anything afterwards. 2 really bizarre murders right across the street from one another -- that's some bad juju. Maybe it should be the plot of a horror movie instead.

Those old Victorians in Ditmas Park have always reminded me of North Shore and some other areas of SI.

You've got these big great old houses but they nearly fill the lot line; so you're just a driveway width away from your neighbor.

Now you can go to parts of NJ (especially ones just a bit too close to a local hood for comfort), and pick up a Victorian with some land around it; so you'll be able to enjoy those sweeping large porches.

Most hammer murderers don't.
