I feel her pain, but unless it’s a non smoking building, he has every right to smoke.

So true but I do wonder if she realized that it was a not non smoking building. Why in your right mind would a non smoker sign a lease to live in a smoking building

I read this and I feel her pain. I live in a NON SMOKING building and people smoke cigs, cigars and weed. Management does sh*t about it of course.

Yeah I feel your pain. My dumb*ss neighbor was guilty of this until he was threatened - letter from the developer's attorney and all. If he does it again, I have no problem reporting him. He's already on the building manager's sh*tlist.

This is a great thing what you guys are doing - reporting the jerks.

Livingsinglenyc's case is a special one though. Management is very lackadaisical for some reason that is so annoying. I cannot wait until I read a, "Idiot Frat House finally gets evicted" post from livingsingle! I think I will take myself out to a steak dinner, of how much I feel that pain - having lived through it myself before!

I'm curious to know what building she lives in. I've worked in property management, and it's very very hard to get a building to go non-smoking unless it's a brand new build / new conversion and is being leased up from scratch.

I guess a rider can put in new leases saying you agree not to smoke inside during your term, and eventually the building will cycle itself out - but if you're living next to someone who was grandfathered in and continues to smoke, while you had to sign something saying you can't - it gets tricky.

As an ex-smoker who finally has my sense of taste and smell back, I realize how unpleasant and heavy cigarette smoke can be and I definitely wouldn't want to smell it day and night in my house. But I also think (based on my experience with tenants) that most people are way too sensitive about it and some people are downright babies. I had someone complain constantly that they were smelling smoke coming from ** outside ** when they opened up their window. From people passing on the street, like it's something that I'd have control over

Because most buildings do not forbid smoking. Constricting your choices to "Non-smoking building" will severely limit where you can live.
