Depending upon where in SI you are going taking the Holland or Lincoln to the Goethals or Bayonne bridge will get you onto the Rock faster than going through Brooklyn.
Live on UES as well, and if home on SI and west of Clove Road or maybe Richmond Avenue will often just suck it up and take the NJT back into the city instead of driving across SI, up Brooklyn, then up the FDR.

OP said they are on the North Shore so going through NJ would be going backwards. This would also be the cheapest route which is what he asked for.
