Hello, I live in the New Brighton/St. George area. I signed up for the SICP for EZPass and don't understand why I can't get the discount for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge when that's what I use to get into SI. We always travel 3+ so we use the HOV lane but I don't understand why I end up paying $12 RT driving if I'm a SI Resident and I have SIR/SICP on my EZPass, is that the cheapest option?
Of course EZPass CS (or at least the agents I'm getting) won't tell me how I can get to and from Manhattan the cheapest. Can any of you share some wisdom? Please!
We work in Midtown, but also travel to 79th and 1st Avenue before coming home...we typically use (depending on where we are) the West Side Highway or FDR Drive to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (old Battery Tunnel) then to the Verrazano-Narrows and into SI. I don't get why there aren't discounts. Again we're always carpooling because it's ALWAYS 2 adults and 2 teens.
What are we doing wrong? We love that it takes us less than an hour to get home so we would like this to be our commute...we've done the Ferry/bus/train combo for 10 years already and were hoping to catch a break but $12/day hurts! LoL
Any advice is more than welcome!!!! We love Staten Island so leaving is NOT an option...we don't want to live in any other Borough (well yes of course we'd love to live in Manhattan but we like to breathe) LoL OH and parking isn't a problem for us we've got that covered.
Cheapest/quickest way from SI to Manhattan is VZ to Brooklyn Bridge ($0 in tolls).
Cheapest/quickest way in reverse is through NJ (outbound traffic is free) to the Goethals if you have 3+ its only $6.50 with plan PACP.
I moved out of SI a long time ago but there used to be a sticker you put on the car which you used with a physical ticket you handed the toll booth worker at the VZ. With the ticket is was only $5.50.

VNB is not always the fastest.
Depending upon where in SI you are going taking the Holland or Lincoln to the Goethals or Bayonne bridge will get you onto the Rock faster than going through Brooklyn.
Live on UES as well, and if home on SI and west of Clove Road or maybe Richmond Avenue will often just suck it up and take the NJT back into the city instead of driving across SI, up Brooklyn, then up the FDR.

Not anymore with the HOV having been extended all the way. If the OP is always 4 people, nothing beats that HOV.
OP, go to the EZPass office. Something is wrong if you aren't getting the SI Resident Discount. Is your car registered on the island?

Well that implies one will have enough passengers in vehicle to qualify for HOV. Sometimes (ok often) am rolling solo or maybe with one other person.
Since most always take the Battery instead of the East River bridges, things are a bit of a wash when going to and from SI via Brooklyn as opposed to NJ.
Generally try to avoid the CF that is the BQE/Gowanus, and lately much of the SIE as well.
Find NJT far better for driving than anything in NYC. Plus can stop to get (somewhat now) cheaper gas and or hit some other spots (like WaWa) before heading back into the city.
I believe the EZ Pass actually has to be set to that mode. It doesn't default to it automatically (so it gives them the option of riding with 1-2 people and paying the higher price, or riding with 3+ people and paying the lower price. Supposedly, they have some way of enforcing it to make sure you're not getting the EZ Pass discount without the right number of people).

Was going to suggest that as well. Family members on SI have had to get a "switchable" EZ-Pass to use the HOV lanes and receive proper discounts.
