As long as they keep an option to not have to use your phone (the separate card etc). I don't want the MTA anywhere near my personal information or my phone. Idiots.
From one of the links above, you'll be able to use MetroCard throughout the transition.

You can say that again. All of the times they've temporarily charged my card with no Metrocard. Let's hope to God that this new system doesn't have the same stupid set up as the Metrocards do. Getting a replacement card takes forever.
I would have no problem using those methods to pay for my metro fare if MTA didn't play the blame game all the damn time, heck my job gives us a card that is re-loaded from the cash that is deducted out of my paycheck. So there are more delays happening to people every day and MTA doesn't always acknowledge there is a problem (check their half working electronic boards or their "all good service" website. And it pisses me off how they blame the riders for the train delays -- "holding the doors", I mean realistically how many people can enter & exit the train doors in what the equivalent of 15 seconds or whatever small amount of time they are using. If they didn't nickel and dime their riders (and ridership keeps going up and I'm pretty sure ridership is probably at capacity) for everything and we don't see where the money is going.
You can't do that if you have a pass and it malfunctions. You have to send it in. If it has money on it you can go to a subway station and the clerk can give you a new card with your amount on it, assuming they can see what's on it.

Note that only works if card is not expired. Should that prove case you'll be handed a bit of paper and instructed to mail the MC to MTA offices.
