In the early 90s, there was the Crown Heights riot where the black community was upset after a Hassidic Jewish man fatally injured an Afro-Guyanese kid while driving and faced no consequences
I remember the Crown Heights situation. Since that was so long ago I'm kinda remembering that more as a protest type reaction(with marches) than a riot where parts of the city was set ablaze. Did Al Sharpton lead any marches in Crown Heights?
In the 1860s, Irish immigrants rioted and burned down black orphanages (they were upset over the idea of being drafted to in the Civil War)

Not everyone remembers little details they learned in high school. Plus the 1863 riot is widely mentioned in social studies textbooks, while the 1991 one is not.
Maybe since the Crown Heights riots was concentrated in just that one area it didn't have a strong affect on the city as a whole?
I found this video on it. Someone commented that they live in Crown Heights and had never even heard of the 91 riots.

Yeah it seemed like it was more of a protest than a riot, however there was some violence. An Italian-American driving a limousine was randomly shot, presumably because he was mistaken for a Jew

Correct, and it seems like the outrage was specifically against the Hassidic Jews rather than a citywide black vs white kind of thing.
I bet a ton of people my age and younger who are native New Yorkers have no idea about the Crown Heights incident. Seventhfloor is overestimating people's knowledge on historic events
